SEDDONS YARD, PEPPER STREET (2) 1974

by Dave Roberts

Here's another glimpse of the buildings associated with Henry Seddon's Pepper Street works as they were in 1974. In the background is the pipe bridge which brought town gas into Middlewich from the gasworks on the other side of the canal and River Croco.
These were the salt stores from which the salt was taken by horse and cart to Middlewich station a short distance away.
It is, perhaps, surprising that these buildings should have lasted so long. St Michael's Way had been completed by this time and these buildings were cut off from their surroundings and awaiting demolition
They're of shoddy, jerry-built construction as were all open-pan salt works buildings, something which is causing problems for the restorers of the Lion Salt Works in Northwich.
How do you restore something which was, for most of its life, falling down and crumbling away?
In present-day Middlewich Alan Shorrock's Dairy buildings occupy at least part of the area shown on our photo.

  1. If, like me, you're new to this blogging lark, here's a tip: If you're particularly interested in a photo and want to study it in greater detail, left-clicking it will bring it up in a new window, greatly enlarged.
