This might be something of a culture shock to many, but not to me. Someone had the bright idea of starting a Facebook group with this enticing title and the results are astonishing - a cavalcade of authentic memories from people who grew up in Middlewich and remember it warts and all, rather than through the rose-coloured glasses many of us like to wear. There's even a brief mention for my own contribution to Middlewich Night Life - 'Dees Disco' at The Vaults (1979-1982).

ReplyDeleteYou Know you're from Middlewich when you know how to spell 'Aqueduct' correctly - this is because Middlewichers always pronounced it 'Akkerduct'!
Or even, in extreme cases, 'th'ackerdock'. This is a rare example of Middlewich dialect using the definite article (or a bit of it, anyway). In most cases it's dropped altogether, as in 'down pub', 'down street', 'down Dillon's'.

ReplyDeleteYou're quite right Dave, 'th'ackerdock' was the norm. Perhaps I've been away too long......!
Also on Facebook, Geraldine Williams said that "You know you're from Middlewich when you call people from Winsford ''Tater cakes'!"
