A slide taken in the cold winter of 1971 and depicting a scene which is actually not what it seems to be.
One of the chimneys on Henry Seddon's Pepper Street site is belching forth black smoke, just as it has done for many years in the past, but no salt is being produced. Instead the chimney is being used for the last time to dispose of timber and debris from the demolished works, prior to this chimney, and its companion to the left, meeting their fate.
The photograph is taken from the back garden of 33 King Street, a location which provided a grandstand view of the end of this particular open-pan salt works over the years from 1967 - 1972..
